Well, I have had this topic floating around in my subconscious for a while and since the forums have been devoid of life for a little bit, I have decided to post this here. Lately, I have been taking a liking to Role-Playing games, and I thought that some of you guys wouldn't mind formal discussion of this topic (Granted if anything here on the forums are ever "formal").

Do you prefer Western RPGs (The Elder Scrolls 3: Oblivion) or Japanese RPGs (Final Fantasy games)? Are there any things that you find repetitive about this genre? Discuss a myriad of things like that here.

well i personal like both tho, there both good. what i like about rpg's is the over all story line in them. when i play an rpg, i wanna see building relation ships between the characters. the curent rpg's that im playing are Persona 3 for the psp, final fantesy 7 criss core (prequal to 7) for the psp, and final fantsy 13 for the 360. some rpg's tend to repeat them selves alot. but i cant name any off the top of my head. like im pretty sure alot of the final fantsy games tend to have reaquring themes.

I like Japanese RPG's myself. I'm a big fan of Atlas, and Enix back when it was teamed up with Tri-Ace, not Square. Not to say the Square Enix merger was bad, I tend to lean towards games like Ar Tonelico, Atelier Iris, Mana Khemia, Persona, basically a fresh take on the genre. For instance, In Ar Tonelico, the idea of centering a story around the power of music was brilliant.

There are positives for sticking with tried and true concepts, but I tend to  like games that stand out for uniqueness, even if they are just average. At least they tried something new, which takes guts.

I'm more into japanese RPG but my RPG culture isn't really good. My favourite ever is chrono trigger. I found a new obsession about dragon quest. I'm currently ending dragon quest IV on DS and i started dragon quest VIII on my PS2. I started a game of Kingdom Heart but i'm not really into it...

I put some hours into DQ8, but hows DQ4 for the DS? Is it good?

Chrono Trigger? Classy.

since I've started playing bioware rpgs I like jrpgs better. I mean the moral system in most games is completely worthless, or grey anyway. For example I could release the slaves in the pitt dlc in FO3 OR I could side with the slavers and get a worthless merchant whose only value is to supply auto axes for repair. The grey moral system means nothing when there's no real in game benefit. I really want to play skies of arcadia now...

My first time playing and RPG was Final Fantasy 7, that is still one of my most favorite games out there, but I like to play both types of RPGs. I'm looking forward to the new elder scroll's Skyrim. after looking at those pics, i knew i have to have that game.

DQ4 is really good. It's still a old-school RPG but what's cool is that you play each character to learn their story before they met each other. Except that, there's nothing really new but it takes a long time to finish it. I have 30 hours of gameplay and i'm not done yet. So the game is really worth its cost. And theres few sidequests to do too.

fable II sucked balls, it was completely linear and there was no character specialization so you always came out as super man or woman. Oh and your character becomes ugly as fuck after one point in the game and there's nothing you can do to make them look remotely pretty. I haven't played fable 3, but after fable 2 I have no interest.

Well depending on how you play you can change how albeion looks in certain areas, but it really has little effect on game once again proving my point that decisions need to have in game pros and cons, or otherwise the whole " do good or bad and oh this is a pretty grey situation" doesn't mean shit

Well, the only problem i had with Fable 3 was that, in the end, if you dont accumulate enough money by the due date (which is INCREDIBLY EASY to miss because of the sudden jumps in time) your game becomes fucked. For every 1 gold under the amount you need, 1 person dies in your world. Being that my first try i was 4 million gold pieces in debt under the limit (making it 10million under total) my world was BARREN. there wasnt an enemy in the world to find, no friends, no townspeople, no shop owners, no renters, just me... all alone...

Other than that though, Fable 3 was pretty close to Fable 2 gameplay wise. They didnt have the point in the game where your character gets hideous and is irreversible, but most of the choices you make were pretty pointless. The only positive point on the choices is in the end, your choices can either give you demon wings during your flourishes, or angel wings. Both of which look INCREDIBLY amazing and was a complete surprise to me when i first saw it, but after a while it loses its luster and becomes second nature to see it.

The only major problem i had was that if you applied make-up to your character at ANY point in the game (like say for an exclusive achievement *cough*) you cannot under any circumstances remove it and be make-up free. There is a make-up that you can apply in place of any other make-up that looks close to a character without it, but everyone can still tell that your wearing eye shadow and blush.

Other than that though, ive recently been playing a lot of DQ9 for the DS. Its pretty fun, but it took me a while to actually force myself to play it. In the very first minute of play, the game proceeds to explain to you how God is the ultimately powerful being who created everything and chooses who lives and who dies, and you are his servant and must protect all humans so that every other angel may one day reach heaven and meet God and worship him. Not to mention the fact that the only way to save the game is by entering one of the 500,000,000 churches in the game and "confessing your sins" to the pastor. After I got past all of that, being that I'm agnostic and don't particularly beleive in God and get frustrated when people press their views upon me, its been a pretty enjoyable game. I find it to be pretty close to FF3 and FF4 for the DS. If you can get past the Christianity crap, id recommend it to RPG players.

That sounds decent, I'll check out DQ9 too.

Anyone here play Grandia?

Maybe Chrono Chross, the sequel to Chrono Trigger?

How about Earthbound?

Or maybe Star Ocean: The Second Story?  <---- put 170 hours into this game. Still couldn't beat it.

I think that you could get into Kingdom Hearts a lot more later, because most of the beginning is just searching for things. I strongly suggest indulging in it more, because I think that it really picks up in Kingdom Hearts 2. One flaw is that the new additions to the series are fillers and they are pretty much just chronological additions (Prequels, stories from a different perspective, et cetera), so that may get boring after a while.

In all honesty, i gave up Kingdom Hearts early on, it was the same story with Fallout 3 for me. But to tell the honest truth, I went back and played both of them, and it picks up very quickly once you understand what your working towards. I cant even describe the countless hours of pure enjoyment ive had with Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2. The second one was MUCH better and you can do soo many more things with it, but you wont understand a lot of the plot in it unless you've made it to the end of the first game.(Not beaten it, but made it very close, I have yet to beat the first kingdom hearts because of getting lost on that godforsaken maze of a fucking castle, but the second game made a lot of sense and was amazing)

The castle with Beast, right? you mean the part where you turn into a heartless? I just jumped off the side untill I got to the first floor, then went into the main hall. The story automatically progressed, but teleports you to the entrance from inside the castle for the cutscene. Then a lotta emotional stuff happens....

i feel a bit left out because i dont realy play RPGs discounting WoW  the last rpg i played was fable 1 WoW was the most amazing game i played (for the first 40 levles) just because of the scenery and notiong else but like the wings in fable 3 it lost its luster  so now i dont realy play WoW anymore (unless i get a hankering) also i have a prety strong distaste for jrpgs

I totally understand that the favor of JRPG's isn't common stateside.

Is there any other genre you like? fighting, shooter, puzzle?

I was into Tekken for a while, then I liked Bloody Roar because it was much more fast-paced.  Lately Street Fighter has been getting faster-paced as well.

Friday night is dodgeball night at my town's sports center. But I've been banned for a few years now....

Well that sucks about getting banned. How did that happen if you dont mind me asking?

Friday night for me and my buddies is our Dungeons and Dragons night (or some form of it, Deathwatch, Champions, Xcrawl etc...)

But also, yes it was that castle, i got past being a heartless easily, but it was the getting back to the room where all the princesses were to fight Riku again for the upteenth time before making it to the Ansem fight in the end that fucked me over, i tried again and again to remember my way through that castle to get to Riku and every time i ended up inside of the same 4 rooms. I even had the strategy guide and could not for the life of me find the pages that guided me through the castle in the beginning. So i never beat the game and eventually had to give it back to the buddy of mine who i was borrowing it from. I bought the second one like a month after it was released and played that endlessly for about a year. It was incredibly fun, but i was kind of upset that they didnt improve the gummi ship system much or the ship battles, but it was kind of fun repeating the fucking impossible mission where you get amazing parts if you can beat the harder modes of it without taking much damage, but fuck was that battle hard. Other than that, all other ship battles were way too easy and i was maxing out the rankings for them the moment they opened. The only other flaw i found with the game was that it was too easy to just grind your form levels up because there was always 1 key location for each form that made it easy to level it up. Like for leveling final form, you just had to go to Ansems lab in the reverse world of Twilight Town to nuke the nobody's there, leave the room, and come back and you can endlessly grind them, level your final form, and gain charge for you to return to final form again to repeat the process. Not to mention that if your actual character level was a problem, all you had to do was go to Pride Rock on Simba's world and grind the hell out of the heartless on top that die in one hit, and you could gain 1-2 levels per trip entering the top zone. I did that from levels 45-88 in roughly 3 hours and it took no effort on my part to stay alive or anything. But, enough about the flaws of Kingdom Hearts 2, even though i enjoyed them.

Heh...I just realized the error I made in the introductory post. "Oblivion" was actually the fourth Elder Scrolls title, sorry about that.

Also, regarding ALostEt3rnity's comment, there are other genres of games that I do like, though that's not saying a whole lot considering that my knowledge of gaming doesn't stretch on far. I am kind of oppressed when it comes to gaming. However, I am not too picky about what genre, with the exception of shooters. I know I am going to sound like an elitist here, but I can't really tolerate most new shooters.

Also, TheEverling, have you considered mail ordering for Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix +?
